Thank you Jeff and his co worker for coming out on the weekend to help with loss of power in my garage. My washer wasn't working and that is very important. I also needed a fan fixed and a new fan put up in my kitchen. Jeff and his co worker are amazing and got the job done very quickly. They are professional and gave us very good service. Thank you once again.
Jeff and Nelson came out to do the initial load calculations for a Tesla Charger installation and for removing an unused high amp outlet in the back of our garage. The outlet was removed and after more inspection, the wiring in the junction box was also the wiring routed to our gazebo in our backyard. There was electrical installed 15 years ago for a bar and outdoor kitchen but it was not up to code and at risk of faulting. Jeff and Nelson were able to locate the wiring underground and was able to replace the outlets and remove all unused wire. It was very impressive. I have the Tesla installation scheduled with them in the next few weeks and I am very excited for it. I would recommend them to anyone I know. They work according to code, and made our family feel comfortable and trusting that the work will be done correctly!

Air Conditioning Wiring in Patterson, CA
Proper air conditioning wiring is a foundational component of a safe and reliable HVAC system. This service involves installing the dedicated electrical circuit that provides power to your AC unit. Air conditioners are high-draw appliances, meaning they consume a large amount of electricity, especially when the compressor starts. They cannot be plugged into a standard wall outlet; they require their own circuit breaker and heavy-gauge wiring. This dedicated circuit ensures the unit receives consistent power without overloading other circuits in your home. It is a critical safety measure to prevent electrical fires and protect the unit from voltage drops. Our team at Frayer Electric is trained to install these circuits to the exact specifications of your unit.
The installation process begins with a load calculation and an assessment of your electrical panel. We must confirm that your main panel has both the physical space for a new double-pole breaker and the amperage capacity to handle the new load. An air conditioner can draw 20, 30, or even 50 amps, placing a significant demand on your service. Our licensed electricians will determine the precise breaker size and wire gauge required by the manufacturer’s nameplate and the National Electrical Code. This step is essential for a safe installation that will pass inspection. We ensure every component is matched correctly.
Our electricians then run the new, heavy-duty electrical cable from the main panel to the exterior of your home. This wire is run through your attic, basement, or crawlspace. We take care to run the wire neatly and securely, following all code requirements for strapping and protection. Once outside, the wire is run in a weatherproof conduit to the location of the AC condenser unit. This protects the wiring from physical damage, sunlight, and moisture. We are meticulous in sealing all penetrations to the outside. This maintains your home’s envelope and prevents pest intrusion.
A critical component of AC wiring is the disconnect switch or service disconnect. The National Electrical Code requires that a lockable disconnect switch be installed within sight of the air conditioner unit. This is a life-safety device. It allows a homeowner or an HVAC technician to shut off all power directly at the unit before performing maintenance or repairs. This prevents any risk of electric shock. We will install a new, weatherproof disconnect box in this required location. We then run a final, flexible whip of conduit from the disconnect to the AC unit’s control panel.
For ductless mini-split systems, the wiring is slightly different but follows the same safety principles. A mini-split system has an outdoor condenser and one or more indoor air handler units. The outdoor condenser requires its own dedicated 240-volt circuit, complete with an outdoor disconnect switch, just like a central AC unit. The indoor units also require power. Sometimes this power is supplied from the outdoor unit via a special control cable. In other cases, the indoor unit may require its own 120-volt circuit. Frayer Electric is experienced in wiring all types and brands of mini-split systems.
We also handle wiring for the indoor air handler or furnace component of a central AC system. This unit, typically located in an attic, closet, or garage, also requires its own electrical circuit. This is usually a 120-volt circuit that powers the system’s fans, electronics, and controls. We ensure this circuit is properly sized and installed. We also handle the low-voltage control wiring that runs between the air handler, the outdoor condenser, and your thermostat. This complex wiring is what allows all the components of your HVAC system to communicate.
Frayer Electric is committed to a safe, professional, and code-compliant installation on every job. Our C-10 License #1101008 is your assurance that you are working with a qualified electrical contractor. We handle the entire process, including pulling the necessary permits and ensuring the work passes inspection. As a locally owned Patterson company, our reputation is built on integrity and quality work. We provide straightforward quotes with no hidden fees. We are dedicated to providing a 5-star experience from the first call to the final test of your new system.

What Makes a Great Air Conditioning Wiring Service
A great air conditioning wiring service is defined by its precision and adherence to safety codes. The service starts with an electrician who correctly reads the AC unit’s nameplate to determine the exact required breaker size and wire gauge. They must perform a load calculation to ensure the main panel can handle the new, heavy load. The installation itself must be meticulous, with all exterior wiring run in weatherproof conduit and a lockable service disconnect installed within sight of the unit. They must also properly bond all metal components as required. A great AC wiring job is clean, durable, and guaranteed to pass electrical inspection.
Most Common Air Conditioning Wiring Questions
Air conditioning wiring is a high-voltage, dedicated circuit that must be installed correctly. Here are the most common questions our customers ask about this service:
This is a critical question, and the answer depends on the type of air conditioner. If you are referring to a small, portable, or window-mounted AC unit, the answer is maybe. These smaller 120-volt units are designed to be plugged into a standard wall outlet. However, they are still high-power devices and can easily overload a shared circuit. It is always best to run them on a dedicated circuit. If your lights flicker or the breaker trips when the window AC kicks on, you must stop using that outlet and call an electrician.
If you are referring to a central air conditioning system or a ductless mini-split system, the answer is absolutely not. These are powerful 240-volt appliances that draw 20 to 50 amps of power. They are not plug-in devices. They must be hardwired to their own, dedicated double-pole breaker in your main electrical panel. Attempting to run one of these systems on a regular outlet is impossible and an extreme fire hazard. They require a heavy-gauge, 4-wire circuit to be professionally installed.
Frayer Electric specializes in installing these dedicated 240-volt circuits. We run the proper wire from your panel directly to the AC unit’s location. This ensures the unit gets the stable, high-amperage power it needs to run safely and efficiently. Never, under any circumstances, should a central AC unit be wired to anything other than its own, properly sized dedicated circuit. Our licensed electricians will ensure this is done to the highest code standards.
An AC disconnect switch, also called a service disconnect, is a small, weatherproof metal box installed on the exterior wall of your home, right next to your air conditioner’s condenser unit. This box contains a switch, often a pull-out handle or a lever, that allows you to completely cut all power to the AC unit. This device is not optional; it is a mandatory safety requirement of the National Electrical Code. Its purpose is to protect anyone who works on the air conditioner, whether it is you, an HVAC technician, or one of our electricians.
Before performing any maintenance, such as cleaning the coils, or any repair, such as replacing a part, the power must be shut off. If the only breaker was inside your home, a technician working outside would be at risk. Someone inside could accidentally flip the breaker back on, energizing the unit while they are working on it. This could result in serious injury, electric shock, or death. The disconnect switch provides a lockout-tagout point. The technician can pull the switch, put their own padlock on it, and know with 100% certainty that the unit is de-energized and safe to service.
Frayer Electric will install a new, code-compliant disconnect switch as part of every AC wiring installation. We ensure it is installed within sight of the unit, as the code requires. This means it must be visible and generally within 50 feet of the equipment. This is a critical life-safety component that we take very seriously. We ensure it is properly wired and sealed against the weather to provide reliable service for decades.
Yes, absolutely. Every central air conditioner, heat pump, or ductless mini-split system requires its own, dedicated electrical circuit. A dedicated circuit is a circuit that originates at its own breaker in your panel and supplies power to only one appliance. This appliance does not share the circuit with any other outlets, lights, or devices in your home. This is a critical requirement for both safety and performance. Air conditioners are powerful machines with large motors and compressors.
These components draw a massive amount of current, especially when they first start up. This inrush current can be several times the normal running current. If your AC unit were to share a circuit with, for example, your bedroom outlets, it would trip the breaker every time it kicked on. This would not only be an annoyance but would also place a dangerous, repeated strain on your electrical system. A dedicated circuit ensures the AC unit has all the power it needs without affecting any other part of your home.
A dedicated circuit also protects the appliance. Voltage drops from other devices on a shared circuit can damage the sensitive electronics and motors in your AC unit, leading to a shortened lifespan. Frayer Electric will run a new, heavy-gauge wire from your panel to the AC disconnect. We will install the properly-sized breaker, ensuring your new air conditioner is powered safely and reliably. This protects your investment and your home.
This is a vital question that our electricians must answer before any installation begins. Adding an air conditioner is a major new electrical load. Whether your panel can handle it depends on its total amperage capacity (e.g., 100 amps or 200 amps) and its current load. To determine this, we must perform a load calculation. This is a mathematical formula set by the National Electrical Code to determine the total electrical demand of your home. We add up the load from your home’s square footage, kitchen appliances, electric dryer, and other major systems.
We then compare this existing load to your panel’s total capacity. If you have a 100-amp service, and your existing load is already at 80 amps, you do not have enough headroom to safely add a new 30-amp air conditioner. This would create a dangerous overload, causing your main breaker to trip and posing a serious fire risk. In this situation, we would recommend a main service upgrade to 200 amps. A 200-amp panel is the modern standard and almost always has the capacity for a full household, including central air.
Frayer Electric will always perform this load calculation as the first step. We provide straightforward quotes and will tell you honestly if your panel is sufficient or if an upgrade is required. We will never install a new AC circuit on a panel that cannot safely support it. Our commitment to integrity means we prioritize your safety above all else. We will find the right, code-compliant solution for your home.
Both central air and ductless mini-split systems require a dedicated 240-volt circuit, but the wiring layout is a bit different. A central AC system is a split system with two main parts. You have the large outdoor condenser unit, and an indoor air handler or furnace. The outdoor condenser requires a single, heavy-duty 240-volt circuit. We run this wire from your main panel to the outdoor disconnect switch, and then to the condenser. The indoor air handler also requires its own circuit. This is typically a 120-volt, 15-amp circuit that powers its fan and control board.
A ductless mini-split system also has an outdoor condenser and one or more indoor heads, or cassettes. The wiring for these systems is often more consolidated. The outdoor condenser is powered by a dedicated 240-volt circuit, just like a central AC unit, complete with a service disconnect. This outdoor unit then often acts as the power hub. A special control wire is run from the outdoor condenser, along with the refrigerant lines, to each of the indoor heads. This single cable provides both power and communication to the indoor units.
In some mini-split models, the indoor heads may require their own 120-volt power source, but it is more common for them to be powered from the outdoor unit. Frayer Electric’s electricians are experienced in both types of installations. We can read the manufacturer’s wiring diagrams for any brand, whether it is a traditional central system or a modern, multi-zone ductless system. We ensure all components are powered according to their exact specifications.
A hard-start kit is a device that can be added to an air conditioner’s compressor. It is essentially an extra capacitor that gives the compressor a boost of energy during startup. The inrush current when an AC compressor first starts is very high. This can cause a momentary dimming of your home’s lights, and it puts a strain on the compressor’s motor. A hard-start kit helps the compressor get to full speed much faster and more efficiently. This reduces the duration of the inrush current, which can lessen the light-dimming effect.
It can also be beneficial for older air conditioners. As a compressor ages, it can have a harder time starting up. A hard-start kit can provide the extra kick it needs to start reliably, which can potentially extend the life of your AC unit. However, a hard-start kit is not a fix for improper wiring. If your breaker is tripping or your lights are dimming severely, the underlying problem may be an undersized circuit, a failing breaker, or a loose connection.
Frayer Electric’s electricians can diagnose these issues. While we do not typically install hard-start kits, as that is part of an HVAC technician’s job, we can ensure that the electrical circuit feeding your unit is robust and correct. We can check for voltage drop and ensure all connections are tight. If the wiring is correct, we can then advise you to speak with your HVAC contractor about whether a hard-start kit is right for your unit.
An AC whip is the name for the final, short, flexible piece of conduit that makes the connection from the service disconnect box to the air conditioner unit itself. The main electrical circuit is run in rigid, permanent conduit to the disconnect box mounted on your wall. From that box, we need a way to connect to the AC’s control panel, which is on the condenser unit sitting on a pad on the ground. This connection needs to be flexible to account for the slight difference in position and to absorb vibration from the unit.
The whip is a pre-assembled, flexible, watertight conduit. It is typically about three to six feet long. Inside this flexible conduit are the THWN (wet-rated) wires that will carry the power. We connect one end of the whip to the disconnect box and the other end to the AC unit’s control panel. This is the last step in the wiring process.
Frayer Electric uses high-quality, UL-listed, liquid-tight whips for all our air conditioning installations. This ensures the final connection is fully protected from weather, weed wackers, and moisture. It provides a durable and professional finish to the installation, guaranteeing that all wiring from the panel to the unit is safe, secure, and code-compliant. Our attention to these details is part of our commitment to quality.
Yes, absolutely. Installing a new circuit for an air conditioner is a major electrical project, and it requires an electrical permit from your local city or county building department. This is not optional. A new circuit adds a significant load to your panel, and the work involves both high-voltage 240-volt wiring and low-voltage control wiring. The permit process is in place to protect you, the homeowner. It ensures that a licensed and insured electrical contractor, like Frayer Electric, is performing the work.
The permit also includes a final inspection. After we complete the installation, a city or county electrical inspector will come to your home to review our work. They will check the breaker size, the wire gauge, the installation of the disconnect switch, and the GFCI protection (if required). They will verify that everything is installed correctly and meets all National Electrical Code safety standards. This third-party verification is your ultimate guarantee that the job was done right.
Frayer Electric handles this entire permitting and inspection process for you. We file the permit paperwork as part of our service. We know exactly what the inspectors are looking for, and we guarantee our work will pass inspection. A completed, approved permit is proof that your new AC wiring is 100% safe and code-compliant.
